[ME. & OFr. revolucion; LL. revolutio, revolutus, pp. of revolvere], 1. movement of a body, as a star or planet, in an orbit or circle: in this sense distinguished from rotation. 2. the time taken for a body to go around an orbit and return to its original position. 3. a turn or twist; a bend or winding. Obs. 4. a turning or spinning motion of a body around a center or axis; rotation. 5. the action of turning over in discourse or talk, or in the mind; discussion; consideration; reflection. Obs. rare. 6. a complete cycle of events: as, the revolution of the seasons. 7. a complete or drastic change of any kind: as, a revolution in modern physics. 8. overthrow of a government, form of government, or social system, with another taking its place.
