Graduate Council of the UC Academic Senate-Irvine Division by Brook Haley — last modified 2006-01-25 10:53
Grad Council sets policy for all academic issues related to graduate education at UCI. It reviews and accepts or rejects changes to program requirements, course listings, exam structures, etc. The Council is also partly responsible for conducting and following up on regular reviews of programs by external experts; these reviews are an excellent place for students to become involved in assessing their programs' stregnths and weaknesses, and the Council has often taken student input--collective and individual--as important and productive parts of the review process. It also serves in an advisory capacity to make recommendations about other aspects of student life, most prominently UCI housing policy. Knowing who your school's faculty representative to the Council is can help you make your views known to the Council, and you can also recommend that your faculty members contact Council members with concerns or questions about ongoing policy discussions.

supporting Grad Student Center idea

Posted by kquick at 2007-04-17 10:43

I fully support the idea of creating a Graduate Student Center. I recently served as the liaison to admitted PhD applicants for my department, and the single most common question I received from prospective students concerned the sense of community on campus, particularly for graduate students. I was a brand new student when the pub closed and really didn't appreciate why people were so concerned about it closing down until it had closed, when I started to sorely miss a graduate student space where we could build a sense of community. I think that such a sense of community is vital to our health and happiness as an intellectual and social graduate community. A graduate student center may not be sufficient by itself to create that, but it certainly is a necessary step.
