Resolution 07-40 – Resolution to Modify Mentoring Award Procedures
Resolution 07-40 – Resolution to Modify Mentoring Award Procedures

Prepared by Scott Summers, Medical Academics Representative

August 21, 2007

WHEREAS the mentoring awards are an opportunity for AGS to foster graduate student mentoring and promote AGS as a campus entity, and

WHEREAS the timeframe for the inaugural awards has been compacted, and several suggestions have come forth to improve both the quality and response to the call for nominations,

LET IT THEREFORE BE RESOLVED that the following modifications will be made to the Mentoring Award nomination procedure:

  1. This Internal Affairs Committee shall put out the call for nominations to all departments at the end of the second week of Winter Quarter.  There will be two categories for the award, tenured and non-tenured.  Emphasis in the latter category will be placed on newer faculty members.
  1. The nomination period for the award will last until the end of the fifth week of Winter Quarter.  During this time, the Internal Affairs Committee will recruit three non-council graduate students (one each from Humanities/Arts, Physical Sciences/Engineering, and Social Sciences), a non-tenured faculty member, and a tenured faculty member as the Selection Committee.
  1. At the end of the fifth week of Winter Quarter, the deans and department chairs of the nominated faculty members will be given notice of their faculty’s nominiation, and will have one week to provide any information they believe pertinent to their faculty member’s nomination.
  1. At the end of the sixth week of Winter Quarter, the Internal Affairs Committee will submit the nominations and supporting materials to the Selection Committee.  The Selection Committee will then have two weeks to decide on three finalists in each category (tenure and non-tenure).
  1. In week eight of Winter Quarter, or at the next AGS council meeting, the list of finalists will be presented to AGS, who will then vote on the award recipients.
