AGS Mentoring Awards Results
The AGS Mentoring Awards inaugural year has been bigger than the council and executives of AGS could have dreamed or expected. Forty faculty members from across campus were nominated, and the honorees were selected by a committee of graduate students representing the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, as well as Carol Sokolov, the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs in the Graduate Division.
The high quality of the mentoring at UCI was evident, but finally, two honorees were chosen. The tenured faculty member chosen was Martha Feldman, in Policy, Planning, and Design, who has not only provided her own graduate students, but those in the department as a whole, with the highest quality academic experience, but has helped them through many life changes, including parenthood and family loss. In the non-tenured category, Emily Grossman, from Cognitive Sciences, was chosen. Her willingness to overcome academic obstacles for her students, and appreciate them as whole people, were evident in her nominations.
Although there are only two honorees, AGS would like to thank the many graduate students who took the time to nominate their faculty, and in particular, the nominees who were not chosen. The fact that their students took the time to write amazing letters nominating them speaks volumes as to the impact they have had on the lives of their graduate students, both inside and outside a formal academic setting.
Thank you, and congratulations to the honorees!
