Graduate Student Associations
UCI has recently reaffirmed the importance of student involvement at all levels of decision-making, especially within our academic programs. Deans and chairs have been reminded of the benefits of our input and of the importance of adhering to UC policy on student involvement (UC Policy Sections 70 and 120).
As part of our efforts to increase students' opportunities for valuable and effective participation in decisions that affect our experiences at UCI, Associated Graduate Students (AGS) is offering tips and methods for getting more involved in the process. These include assistance in creating and registering graduate student associations (GSAs) for particular departments, as well as opportunities for service on campus-wide committees.
GSAs can help foster a greater sense of community within or across given disciplines, facilitate the process of selecting student representatives to faculty and committee meetings, increase student awareness about decisions that affect them, and request funds for special events.
The more awareness and involvement occur locally, the more likely we are to share campus-wide awareness and a role in shaping UCI, as well. For help organizing yours, contact president "at" ags.uci.edu or vpinternal "at" ags.uci.edu. More links and documents to help you create or transform a departmental or discipline-based GSA are coming soon!
