Determination of program/event merit
Who is your target audience?
This concert is better focused towards UCI’s multi-ethnic audience, and more so than any of our previous concerts. The reason, more than the actual performance or the performers, is the instrument itself. The violin is a predominant member of most musical traditions, and so it needs no introduction to its listeners. What makes it so desirable to most listeners is its curious quality of being able to fit in so seamlessly into both western and eastern classical traditions, so that listeners often wonder where it really originated. The artists we wish to present, Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, hold the well-earned reputation of being torchbearers of a deeply specialized style within the ornate realms of Carnatic (or South Indian) Classical Music. They have been admired for their precision, their sophisticated yet disciplined style, and their ability to play compositions full with emotions as if they were singing them in words. Yet, we wish to accomplish much more than the promotion of Carnatic Music through this concert. We hope that through the medium of such an event, we can truly promote music itself, using the violin as a bridge to bring together ardent music enthusiasts from different cultures. Diverse students and faculty members will be able to better enjoy this concert. Although the style of performance might be new to them, the sounds will be the same. We genuinely believe that this could be a great opportunity for anyone with a keen interest in music: the ones who wish to learn about Indian Music, those who seek aesthetic joy from the duo’s enchanting performances, and those who simply come out of their love for the violin.
How many people will benefit from requested AGS funding?
We had an audience of 250 people in the last concert we did. We are looking for audience strength of 250-300 this year.
