09-88 Prioritize Quality of University of California Advanced Degrees

WHEREAS the Preamble of the AGS Constitution specifies that AGS shall “provide a forum for the expression and recognition of graduate students’ needs and rights”;
 
WHEREAS AGS Council has traditionally voiced graduate student opinion and needs through the passing of legislation;
 
WHEREAS AGS realizes that the fiscal constraints on the University of California have encouraged a reevaluation of the University operations;
 
WHEREAS graduate students are concerned about the preservation of the quality of their degrees and thus their appeal on the job market;
 
 WHEREAS Many departments are considering new and creative ways, including the creation of Master’s programs, to offset the cost of their Ph.D. Programs and continue to operate in fiscal uncertainty;
 
 WHEREAS increasing enrollments for certain types of programs may require lowering admission standards and may result in a degrading of the quality of the University of California advanced degrees;
 
LET IT THEREFORE BE RESOLVED that the quality of advanced degrees be made a priority when making university decisions regarding the creation of revenue generating program
