This extraplanar horror has been known to decimate entire parties of unwary adventurers. What motivates these horrors is largely unknown, although some sages believe that the appearance of these horrors is some sort of retribution for defeating heroes of the dark gods. Sometimes they suddenly appear, kill one or two adventurers, and then disappear – leaving a deep paranoia in those surviving the bewildering attack.
The whispering horror attacks by charging into its chosen victim. Partially incorporeal, its body is pale white and largely transparent, but the armored fins that line the creature’s nine-foot tubular body create damage that is all too real. These horrors are intelligent and will often attack wizards or sorcerers first. Their modus operandi involves ambushes where they use swooping or rushing attacks that score double damage. They are capable of charging, reversing direction and then charging again on the subsequent round.
The high AC of the whispering horror derives from its great speed, tough armor, and partially incorporeal state. To make matters worse for its victims, 25% of all damage-dealing attacks (magical and non-magical) will fail due to the whispering horror’s partial incorporeality. Survivors of encounters with these aborachi (denizens of the lower planes) speak in hushed tones of the ghostly whispering that heralded its imminent attack.
When a whispering horror is defeated, shards of its
armored shell fall to the earth and an unholy wail rises to the heavens.
