Finnegans Wake Sigla Font

Here's my ongoing attempt to create a TrueType font of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake sigla. Ian Gunn has also been working on this, and created the font used in Danis Rose's The Textual Diaries of James Joyce. For an overview of the problems inherent in creating a font like this one, look at his Modest Proposal for a Wake typeface. For the reasons given there, these fonts are works in progress and subject to change in the future. Comments and advice are welcome.

Here's a sample of what the fonts look like. If they look a little fuzzy here, that's probably because of my low-end graphics program. The actual fonts look as smooth as any other TrueType font when you print them.

Wake Sigla Heavy

My plan is eventually to include two different weights. Some Joyceans like their sigla skinny, others like them less skinny. Including two different weights will let Joyceans use whichever version they prefer. It also means designing both weights. I've started with the heavy version, and I'll add the light version when time permits.

The file is fairly small, so I haven't zipped it. This font works with Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, and should work with Windows NT (although I haven't tested it yet). If you aren't sure how to install a font on your computer, consult these directions.

Actually, since I don't own a Mac, this file isn't quite ready for use. The file here is on its way to becoming a Mac file, but needs to be run through a program called MMPC2MAC to finish the conversion. The program can only be run on a Mac. If you download this file, you'll either need to finish the conversion yourself using MMPC2MAC, or invite me over and let me use your Mac for an hour or so.
