 Resolution 09-02 – AGS Statement Regarding Amplified Sound

Prepared by Josh Gellers, Social Sciences

January 6, 2009

WHEREAS Amplified sound emanating from powered speakers approved in advance by Administration for student organization activity along Ring Road is a major source of disturbance at the University of California, Irvine, and;

WHEREAS Current practices of undergraduate student organizations present clear violations of Section 2 of the UCI Guidelines on Use of Amplified Sound, namely that “Amplified sound which disrupts or conflicts with the functioning or operation of the University is prohibited,” and;

WHEREAS Amplified sound along Ring Road currently carries music to areas of campus reserved for academic purposes only and not currently covered by the University’s Guidelines on Use of Amplified Sound such as Langson Library and Social Science Plaza A, and;

WHEREAS All students should have the right to conduct their studies and take classes in an environment conducive to learning and one that reflects the culture of academic excellence at the University, and;

WHEREAS A conscientious university policy regarding amplified sound during school hours must be well articulated and rigorously enforced in order to prevent disruptions to intellectual pursuits, and;

WHEREAS Such a policy should further restrict the presence of amplified sound during school hours and prohibit amplified sound during midterms and finals weeks entirely;

LET IT THEREFORE BE RESOLVED THAT AGS adopt this resolution urging Administration to revisit their current policy and promote the enforcement of new, more stringent standards regarding amplified sound.
